Tourette Syndrome

Tourette Syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by repetitive, involuntary movements and vocalizations called tics. Tics typically begin in childhood, often fluctuate in severity, and may improve in adulthood. The condition frequently co-occurs with ADHD and OCD. While there is no cure, behavioral therapy and medication can help manage tics when they interfere with daily functioning.

⚠️Symptoms

  • Multiple motor tics (blinking, head jerking, shoulder shrugging)
  • One or more vocal tics (grunting, throat clearing, words)
  • Tics present for more than one year
  • Onset before age 18

πŸ”Causes

  • Genetics (runs in families)
  • Brain chemistry differences (dopamine, serotonin)
  • Environmental factors during pregnancy or early childhood

πŸ’ŠTreatment Options

  • Behavioral therapy (habit reversal training, CBIT)
  • Medication (antipsychotics, alpha-adrenergic agonists)
  • Psychoeducation for patient and family
  • School accommodations
